Serock Jewish Cemetery, Poland |
Commission Member Lee Seeman, upon seeing a picture of Jewish gravestones taken from a cemetery in Serock, Poland, vowed to restore this historic site. Headstones in the cemetery date as far back as 1524. Seeman’s interest in doing a search for this cemetery was initially sparked by U.S. Representative Gary Ackerman. In an interview in the Great Neck Record, Congressman Ackerman said, “I am honored that Lee is working on a cemetery in the town where my mother was born, and all of my grandparents lived.” Thirty gravestones taken from the cemetery are being used to build a memorial wall on the cemetery site. A fence around the cemetery and perpetual care will be provided.
