Identifying
and Reporting on Sites |
Identifying sites is one of the Commission’s two basic statutory assignments. Sites are primarily identified through field surveys conducted on a country basis by local individuals or organizations contracted by the Commission. Key findings are printed. Complete data has also been posted on the Internet as part of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies’ International Jewish Cemetery Project available at www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/e-europe/.
The Commission has conducted surveys of sites associated with population groups annihilated by the Holocaust and sites associated with other minorities. The surveys place a focus on identifying endangered sites.
Major site surveys have been conducted in the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Slovenia, Lithuania, and Hungary.
Surveys are currently being conducted in: Estonia; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Croatia; Serbia and Montenegro; Bulgaria; Latvia; and Moldova.
Additional survey work is being done in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovenia to expand and update previously completed reports.
