The Holocaust Memorial in the Rumbula forest, Riga, Latvia. The
Commission co-sponsored and raised the funds for this memorial to
more than 25,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis and local collaborators
during two days in November and December of 1941. Latvia’s
President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said at the dedication ceremony on
November 29, 2002: “It is a sad and black day in the history
of Latvia, one about which we wish to tell our people and our children.”
