  An agreement between the U.S. and Croatia on the preservation of historic sites, religious buildings, cemeteries and memorials is signed by Croatia’s Culture Minister, Bozo Biskupic, left, and U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad Chairman Warren L. Cultural Heritage Preservation Projects

Photograph of the pre-burial house at the Sarajevo Jewish Cemetery, Bosnia and Herzegovina, summer 2002. The building, part of the city’s oldest intact religious cemetery, was burned during the 1992-95 civil war. It is being restored with the U.S. aid through he Commission. Photograph of the Ozarow Jewish Cemetery in Poland, early 2001. The Commission co-sponsored its subsequent restoration. Photograph of a 17th century Greek-Catholic wooden church in Slovakia, Summer 2001. The church, one of 28 in the Carpathian region, is a Slovakian national historic site. The Commission is seeking assistance to preserve the church.
Photograph of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp 'Little Camp' Memorial in Germany, Spring 2002. The Commission sponsored the memorial. In words on one of the walls, the memorial provides a peaceful place for reflection on the site of the 'deepest despair'. Photograph of the Holocaust Memorial in the Rumbula forest, Riga, Latvia. The Commission co-sponsored and raised the funds for this memorial to more than 25,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis and local collaborators during two days in November and December of 1941. Latvia’s President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said at the dedication ceremony on November 29, 2002: 'It is a sad and black day in the history of Latvia, one about which we wish to tell our people and our children.'
