The Potoky Wooden Church, Slovakia

Potoky Greek-Catholic Wooden Church Bell Tower, Slovakia. The Potoky wooden church is located near the village of Strocin between Svidnik and Strotropsov, in the Republic of Slovakia. Built in 1773, it is devoted to Saint Paraskieva.

The furniture and the iconostasis are original but the church building is in immediate need of complete reconstruction. The wooden understructure resting on the foundation is decayed, and the floor slopes downward at least five degrees toward the rear of the structure from the altar. Further deterioration could render the church unsuitable for public use and a total loss.

Plans are in place to reconstruct the building, however, the necessary funds need to be raised. The estimated cost is $229,000. To date, the local priest has received $91,000 from the foundation of the VUB/Slovak Bank. It will be a challenge to raise the balance of $128,000 and assistance is needed from other sources.

Contributions are being sought for this restoration project by Commission Member Peter P. Hawryluk. Donations by U.S. residents qualify for the charitable contribution deduction for federal income tax purposes. The instructions for making a donation are at the bottom of this Website.
