Mass Grave Sites, Poland

Memorial near a mass grave site at Strzelce. The inscription written in Polish, English, and Hebrew reads, in part: “14 Jews were shot to death by the Nazis and buried on this site in May 1942.”

Commission Member Harley Lippman is responsible for funding the identification and marking of a number of Holocaust mass graves in Poland. The Commission has been working with a Warsaw-based organization, “The Lasting Memory Foundation,” to locate the graves of Jews killed by German troops and to install monuments at the sites. Monuments made out of black granite have been placed in Strzelce and Wolka Dobrynska. A dedication of a marker at Busno is planned for the fall of 2010. Additional mass grave sites have been identified at Brzyska Wola, Czernic, Dabrowa, Feliksin, Godziszow, Jagiel, Kaweczyn, Krzywda, Przymiarki, Serokomla, Smuga, and Zdzilowice.

The identification of the sites has been documented in a film Mr. Lippman’s efforts are funding. The documentary follows a Polish Catholic man who travels around Poland by bicycle to locate the mass graves. The documentary includes eyewitness accounts and commentaries by Holocaust experts.
