Working with the Commission, and, with the assistance of the U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Brian E. Carlson, the family of the late, world-renewed artist, Mark Rothko, funded the restoration of a synagogue in the artist’s hometown of Daugavplis. The synagogue is one of only two still functioning in the country, and the only one left in Daugavpils out of some 70 prior to World War II.
